Digital Desk: The principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College resigned on Monday as junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate trainees at the institution continued their strike for a fourth consecutive day. They are demanding a magisterial inquiry into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor.
The striking medical staff had been calling for the resignation of Sandeep Ghosh. The protests have led to the closure of outpatient centers at RG Kar College and Hospital, causing significant inconvenience to patients. Although junior doctors had been handling emergency duties over the past three days, they ceased all responsibilities as of Monday morning, according to sources cited by PTI.
The trainee doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital with visible injury marks. An autopsy later confirmed that she had been raped and murdered. The alleged perpetrator, a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10 (Saturday) and is currently in 14-day police custody.
Kolkata Police's detective department is set to interrogate three doctors and one housekeeping staff member from the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after 11 am. Those to be questioned include an intern doctor, two first-year postgraduate students from the chest medicine department, and a housekeeping staff member. These individuals were on night duty on August 9, the day the semi-nude body of the trainee doctor was discovered. Some of them had reportedly dined with the victim before the incident.
The case has sparked widespread outrage in West Bengal and beyond, with medical students and doctors staging protests to seek justice and accountability.
Delhi Doctors on Strike
In response to the Kolkata incident, doctors at ten government hospitals in Delhi, including Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, have gone on strike, suspending all elective services. The participating hospitals are Maulana Azad Medical College, RML Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, GTB, IHBAS, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, and the National Institute of TB and Respiratory Diseases Hospital. The strike, which began at 9 am, is organized by the Resident Doctors' Associations (RDA).
The protesting doctors are demanding a CBI inquiry into the case and enhanced security for medical practitioners nationwide. While outpatient services have been halted, emergency services at the hospitals will continue.
