Digital Desk: In a decisive move, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has announced a nationwide shutdown of Outpatient Department (OPD) services beginning August 13. This action follows a tragic incident on August 9, where a post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered.
The assault reportedly occurred in the early hours, with a civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, currently under arrest for the crime. The severe nature of the incident has sent shockwaves through the medical community, prompting FAIMA to launch a nationwide protest to show solidarity with the victim and demand justice.
FAIMA has called on doctors across India to join the protest, expressing their support through a statement on social media: "We stand with protesting doctors all over India! We call on doctors nationwide to join this protest from tomorrow onwards! We want justice!"
In response to the tragedy, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded an impartial and thorough investigation into the case.
The IMA has also appealed to Union Minister JP Nadda for a detailed inquiry and recommended measures to improve the safety of doctors, especially women, in their workplaces. The association has stressed the need for prompt and decisive action from the West Bengal government to ensure that justice is served and to enhance the security of medical professionals.
