Navjot Singh Sidhu humiliates Congress, says "New Anti-Mafia Era"

Navjot Sidhu had previously attracted headlines for thanking the Punjabi people for making a "great decision" in voting for the AAP.

Digital Desk: Navjot Singh Sidhu, who resigned as Punjab Congress chief the day before, continues to praise the AAM Admi Party, which seized the state from his party.

Sidhu tweeted his congratulations to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, saying that Mr Mann "unfurls a new anti-mafia era in Punjab." Following his party's defeat, he was chastised for thanking the Punjabi people for their "good decision" to vote for AAP.

"The happiest guy is the one no one expects... Bhagwant Mann ushers in a new anti-Mafia era in Punjab with a mountain of expectations...hope he rises to the occasion, takes Punjab back on the resurrection route with pro-people policies... best always," he tweeted.

Last year, Sidhu was even involved in the Congress party's long-running infighting, which many think was one of the reasons for the party's devastating defeat. As a result, he confronted former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, accusing him of shielding the narcotics mafia and being easy on political opponents accused in the sensitive sacrilege issue.

Captain Singh was then abruptly ousted from his position as chief of staff and replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi two months before the state assembly elections. Following Captain Singh's ouster, Mr Sidhu, who unsuccessfully campaigned for Chief Minister, continued to criticise his own party's leadership, led by Mr Channi.

Navjot Singh Sidhu drew attention for thanking the people of Punjab for making a "great decision" in choosing AAP in his first media appearance, which was followed by the party's defeat when questioned how he can say that as the president of Congress, he stated that the people have chosen change and that they are never wrong.

"The people's voice is the voice of God. We must accept it with humility and bow before it, "he stated. Sidhu himself was defeated by Jeevanjyot Kaur of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Amritsar East by over 6,000 votes. Ms Kaur received 39,520 votes, while he received 32,929 votes.
