Digital Desk: On September 17, 2023, India's Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi turns 73 years old. His party, the BJP, has chosen to celebrate his birthday in style by organising bike rallies and other events across India.
Many people have been inspired by PM Modi's path from tea vendor to India's Prime Minister. With his vision for a strong and wealthy India, Prime Minister Modi has inspired a new generation of Indians.
Modi is the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and Hiraben Modi in Gujarat's Vadnagar. During his boyhood, his father owned a modest tea kiosk at Vadnagar railway station, where he would assist him. Following his father's death, his mother raised him by working as a housekeeper at nearby households.
Despite his lowly origins, Modi was a talented student who was destined to do great things for his country. At a young age, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organisation and ideological mentor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
Although Modi has been involved in politics since his early twenties, he rose to prominence after the 1990s. He was selected as the Gujarat BJP's general secretary. He was seen as an important side in BJP's win in the Gujarat Assembly elections in 1995. This was the turning point in his rise within the BJP's state unit.
In 2001, PM Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat and has been successful ever since. As the chief minister, he oversaw a significant economic expansion in the state and implemented several social welfare programs such as the SWAGAT online platform, Vibrant Gujarat Summit, Praveshotsav, and Gunotsav, and commemorated various national holidays.
His popularity grew in Gujarat, and he led the BJP to consecutive election victory there. Soon after, his Gujarat model of governance gained national acclaim, and the BJP designated him as its prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
He led the BJP to a historic win in the 2014 general elections, becoming the country's prime minister. Modi's ambitious initiatives as Prime Minister of India included the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), the Make in India campaign, and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (Prime Minister's People's Money Scheme).
Modi was re-elected with an even more emphatic victory in national elections in 2019. PM Modi's leadership has had a huge impact on India, which has risen to fifth place among the world's top economies. The Prime Minister has now pledged that India will be the world's third-largest economy by 2030.
Despite opposition criticism on a variety of problems, Narendra Modi remains the most popular leader in India and the world. Modi is regarded as a strong leader capable of making difficult decisions in the best interests of the country. While his legacy is still intact, he is honoured as an important person in Indian politics.
