Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the new “shell shaped” integrated terminal building (NITB) at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands today. The new facility, which was built for $708 crore, aims to improve connectivity to the union territory's island.

According to a government news release, the Union Minister of State for Road, Transport and Highways and Civil Aviation, General (Retd.) V K Singh, as well as other top officials, will attend the inauguration ceremony.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi published several images of the terminal. He claims that the new facility will "significantly boost tourism in particular.”He added, "The new integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair, will ensure easier travel to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.”
The New Integrated Terminal Building which covers around 40,800 sqm, will be capable of serving about 50 lakh passengers annually, reports stated. It "will further boost tourism and create new economic and employment opportunities for local communities," Mr Scindia said in a Tweet.

The architecture of the airport terminal is formed like a shell and represents the ocean and islands. The new airport terminal building has several sustainable features, according to PM Office (PMO), including a double-insulated roofing system to reduce heat gain, skylights to provide the most amount of daylight entry during the day to reduce the need for artificial light inside the building, LED lighting and low heat gain glazing.

Other features of the terminal building to ensure a minimal negative impact on the environment of the islands include a 500 KW capacity solar power plant, an on-site sewage treatment plant with 100% of treated wastewater reused for landscaping, and rainwater catchment in an underground water tank.
The airport's tarmac, which cost 80 crore rupees to build can accommodate two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321-type aircraft. The PMO claimed that 10 aircraft could be parked there at once. Notably, Port Blair is a well-liked tourist destination as it serves as the entrance to the pristine Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
