    PM Narendra Modi: No need to fear from Omicron
    Digital Desk: Amidst the rising cases of omicron in the country, PM Narendra Modi on Saturday stated that India has 18 lakh isolation beds, 5 lakh oxygen-supported beds, 1.40 lakh ICU beds, and 90,000 special beds for children.

    "Today, the nation has 18 lakh isolation beds, 5 lakh oxygen supported beds, 1.4 lakh ICU beds and 90,000 special beds for kids," the Prime Minister said while addressing the nation. 

    "We now have over 3,000 operational PSA Oxygen units and 4 lakh cylinders distributed across all states," he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked people not to panic over the rising number of Omicron cases of the COVID-19 strain.

    "Omicron infection has been discovered in a large number of patients in India. I would advise everyone not to panic, but to exercise caution and vigilance." In his address to the nation, the Prime Minister emphasised the need of handwashing and wearing a mask.

    According to the Union Health Ministry, India has reported 7,189 new COVID-19 cases in the previous 24 hours. Meanwhile, 415 cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus have been reported across the country. In the wake of the Omicron scare and an increase in cases across the country, the Union Health Ministry announced that multi-disciplinary Central teams would be sent in ten states on Saturday.

    "A decision has been taken to deploy multi-disciplinary Central teams to 10 identified States some of which are either reporting an increasing number of Omicron and COVID-19 cases or slow vaccination pace," the Union Health Ministry said in an official statement.

    Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Mizoram, Karnataka, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Punjab will all receive multi-disciplinary central teams. These teams will be stationed in the states for three to five days, working alongside state health officials.

    According to the Ministry, these teams will focus on contact tracing, which will include surveillance, containment operations, and COVID-19 testing, as well as delivering enough samples from clusters to the INSACOG network for genome sequencing.

    "The State level central teams will assess the situation, suggest remedial actions and submit a report every evening by 7 PM on the public health activities being undertaken to both the Central and state government," the statement further read.

    According to the Union Health Ministry, India has reported 7,189 new COVID-19 cases in the previous 24 hours. Meanwhile, the number of cases of the Omicron strain of coronavirus in the United States reached 415 on Saturday.
