    Pramod Sawant takes oath as Goa Chief Minister for 2nd Consecutive term

    Pramod Sawant, who led the BJP to 20 seats in the recently ended elections to the 40-member Goa Assembly, was sworn in for the second time


    Digital Desk: Pramod Sawant, who led the BJP to 20 seats in the recently ended elections to the 40-member Goa Assembly, was sworn in for the second time as the state's Chief Minister on Monday.

    Mr Sawant, 48, was sworn in by Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai at the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee stadium near the state capital Panaji.

    The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, BJP national president JP Nadda, Himachal Pradesh Governor Rajendra Arlekar, and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis.

    A new Speaker will be elected during the session, which is scheduled to finish a variety of legislative activity, including bill passage and a vote-on-account (an exercise to cope with the government's short-term expenditure demands), they added.

    The BJP gained 20 seats in the recently concluded state elections, falling one seat shy of a majority in the 40-member House. The BJP has received backing from three independent MLAs and two members from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP).

    Mr Sawant, 48, is a member of the North Goa Legislative Assembly representing Sankhalim. When the BJP established its administration in 2017 under Manohar Parrikar's leadership, he was chosen Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

    In March 2019, he was sworn in as chief minister for the first time after Parikar's death.

    Mr Sawant, an Ayurvedic physician, was in charge when the coastal state, like the rest of the country, was hit by the COVID-19 epidemic.
