Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann appoints a new SIT in the Majithia narcotics case

Punjab's new administration, led by AAP leader Bhagwant Mann, constituted a new Special Investigation Team to look into a narcotics case involving Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Majithia.

Digital Desk: After Mann was sworn in as Punjab's new chief minister, the Punjab Police department issued one of the first directives.

On Sunday, Punjab's new administration, led by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Bhagwant Mann, constituted a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into a narcotics case involving Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Majithia.

According to the DGP of Punjab, Viresh Kumar Bhawra, the investigation would be overseen by senior personnel of the Bureau of Investigation.

As one of the first directives issued by the Punjab Police Department after Mann was sworn in as the state's new chief minister following the AAP's Arvind Kejriwal's massive victory in the recent Assembly election, the team leading the new SIT will be Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Rahul S, including AIG Ranjit Singh Dhillon, deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) Raghbir Singh, and Amarpreet Singh.

AIG Balraj Singh led the previous SIT constituted by the Charanjit Singh Channi-led administration.

Majithia was defeated in the Amritsar East constituency by AAP's Jeevanjyot Kaur (50), who by profession is a social activist along with former Punjab Congress head Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Majithia, a minister in the SAD-BJP cabinet, was arrested on December 20 last year under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The former minister is now being held in the Patiala jail, and a Mohali court had extended his judicial custody until March 22.
