Digital Desk: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi announced today that the party's Working Committee has resolved to carry out a caste census in states, underscoring the commitment to uplift economically disadvantaged communities. Addressing the media in a press conference, Rahul Gandhi emphasized that the initiative is not motivated by considerations of caste or religion but is aimed at benefiting the underprivileged sections of society.
"We have decided we will implement a caste census, and we don't break promises. The step is not about caste and religion. It is being done for the poor people," stated Rahul Gandhi firmly.
Highlighting the contrast between Congress and BJP's representation of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, Rahul Gandhi pointed out that Congress currently has four Chief Ministers, with three hailing from the OBC community. In contrast, the BJP boasts ten chief ministers, but only one represents the OBC community.
Furthermore, Rahul Gandhi stressed the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly announcing initiatives designed to uplift the OBC community, echoing the sentiment that social justice should be at the forefront of government policies.
Rahul Gandhi affirmed that the Congress party is committed to pressuring the BJP into conducting a caste-based census and proposed that if the BJP doesn't comply, they should grant the Congress party the authority to lead in this matter.
"We have four CMs, and three are from the OBC community. BJP has 10 CMs, and only one of them is from the OBC. Narendra Modi will have to tell the people of the country what he has done for the community. We will force the BJP to carry out a caste census, and if they don't do it, they should leave it to us," stated Rahul Gandhi, flanked by Chief Ministers of Karnataka, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
Rahul Gandhi also highlighted that most of the alliance partners within the INDIA alliance are likely to support the idea of a caste census, emphasizing that the decision to implement one is not a political choice but a step taken to promote social justice.
Rahul Gandhi's announcement comes on the heels of an order issued by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in Rajasthan for the implementation of a caste survey. Additionally, in Chhattisgarh, the Congress has pledged to conduct a caste survey if it is voted to power again. The Congress has also asserted that in Madhya Pradesh, its primary agenda will be the holding of a caste census. Congress-ruled Karnataka has already announced the survey and is expected to release its results later this year.
Earlier today, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted that during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, people belonging to backward classes from every state emphasized the urgent need for a caste census in the country, reinforcing the growing demand for this initiative.
