    Rishabh Pant beats Kapil Dev's record, scores fastest 50 by an Indian in Test cricket

    Rishabh Pant's innings included seven fours and two sixes in 28 balls, an unusual statistic in the red-ball style of the match.


    Digital Desk: On March 13, Indian wicket keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant smashed a half-century off just 28 balls, breaking the record for the fastest 50 by an Indian in Test cricket.

    Former Indian captain Kapil Dev held the previous record when he hit a 30-ball 50 against Pakistan in 1982.

    "Rishabh Pant has surpassed Kapil Dev as the fastest Indian to reach 50 in Test cricket. It has been delivered 28 times, " the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated on Twitter.

    Pant's fifty occurred in India's second Test match against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru during the second innings. Pant, who was out to bat at number 5 with India on 116/3, accelerated the score by attacking the Lankan bowling side.

    Given a span of 28 balls, he hit seven fours and two sixes, an unusual statistic in the red-ball format of the game. However, Pant's brilliant innings ended when he was trapped and dismissed by left-arm bowler Praveen Jayawickrama on a tossed-up delivery with 51.

    India's scoreboard was 197/5 at the time of writing, with right-handed batter Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja at the wicket. The team had a 340-run lead against the Sri Lankans.

    India had scored 252 in the first inning, a respectable total on a bowler-friendly surface. In retaliation, the Lankan team was dismissed for 109 runs.

    With only three days left, the chances of a tie are slim. In the fourth innings, the visitors will have a huge task chasing what appears to be a 350+ mark.
