SC issues notice to Delhi Police on wrestlers’ plea seeking FIR against WFI Chief
In the meantime, the Delhi Police has asked the sports ministry for a report on the oversight committee's current situation.

Digital Desk: On a petition filed by protesting wrestlers asking for the filing of an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Supreme Court has sent a notice to the Delhi Police.

On Friday, a bench presided over by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud gave Delhi Police a notice requesting a response to the wrestlers' contention.

The plea filed by wrestlers who have represented India in international competition contains a severe accusation, the court observed. The court ordered that the complaints that were submitted under sealed covers be resealed and inserted beneath the petition.

The petitioners' identities will be redacted for this case, the court further emphasised. When Senior Attorney Kapil Sibal brought up the wrestlers' urgent hearing request on a petition calling for the filing of an FIR against the WFI chief, the court gave the order.

The nation's top wrestlers, who have been protesting WFI chairman Brij Bhushan Singh, have petitioned the Supreme Court to file an FIR against him. They also urged the high court to order the Delhi Police to do so.

The sports ministry formed a six-person oversight committee in January of this year, with boxer Mary Kom serving as its chair, to look into the accusations made against the WFI, its president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, and other trainers.

In the meantime, the Delhi Police has asked the sports ministry for a report on the oversight committee's current situation.

Leading wrestlers protested the WFI presidency on Sunday by staging sit-ins at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia. The WFI and its leader were accused of sexual harassment and treating wrestlers unfairly by the wrestlers.
