Digital Desk: The delimitation process in Assam will continue, but the Supreme Court will look into whether the Election Commission can carry out the process on its own. Delimitation used to be a collaborative effort that also included courts, but the government handed the power to the Commission in 2008.
The borders of Assam's assembly and parliamentary constituencies were last redrawn in 1976. New efforts to repeat the procedure began in 2005.
Earlier this month, the Election Commission held a three-day meeting to consider the objections to the first draft, which was presented in 2007.
While hearing a petition from ten opposition parties today, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre, asking for a response to their appeal. It also directed the Election Commission to reply to pleas challenging the delimitation of Lok Sabha and assembly seats in Assam.
