Shiv Sena leaders staged a sit-in protest against temple authorities after some broken idols were found in the trash outside the temple premises.
During the rally, some unidentified individuals fired at Suri. While some of his supporters were tending to him, others could be seen shooting rounds into the air.
The place where the bullet was fired is thought to be a residential area. Sources claim that the police have taken the attacker into custody. The Shiv Sena leader was attacked while he was talking to a police official.
Suri was reportedly on a hit list, and he was already guarded by a strong squad. The accused attacker was arrested by the crowd and later put into jail by police. Sandeep Singh has been identified as the suspected attacker.
In response to the incident, Tajinder Singh Bagga, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, attacked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, claiming that law and order had failed in Punjab. "Law and order collapsed in Punjab, Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri injured in firing in Amritsar," he tweeted.
Suri made headlines after his arrest in July of this year on suspicion of inciting religious fervour and using derogatory language about a certain community.
He shared a video on social media in which he and some of his associates can be heard saying derogatory language towards the community.
