    Syed Ali Geelani: Face of Kashmir’s Separatist group dies aged 92

    Srinagar: Kashmiri separatist leader, Syed Ali Geelani, also a veteran campaigner against Indian rule, died in Srinagar after a prolonged illness at the age of 92. Geelani has been under house arrest for much of the past 11 years.





    A strict security clampdown has been imposed in Srinagar, Kashmir’s main city, fearing mass procession, protest, mourning his death.





    A family member told Reuters Geelani developed chest pain and chest congestion on Wednesday afternoon and died late at night at his residence in the region's main city of Srinagar.





    Police chief Vijay Kumar told Reuters the internet was shut down as down as a precautionary measure and restrictions imposed in the Kashmir valley.





    The roads leading to Geelani's residence in Srinagar were sealed, another official said.
