Uttar Pradesh to allow Kanwar Yatra with Covid restrictions

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government will allow the yearly Kanwar Yatra in the state from July 25. Officials have been directed to coordinate with adjacent states to assure Covid guidelines are observed, a senior official stated on Wednesday.

'Kanwariyas' (followers of Lord Shiva) accumulate water from River Ganga at Haridwar to offer at Shiva temples in their regions as part of the Yatra.

Uttarakhand has canceled the Yatra this year, citing the pandemic. Uttar Pradesh Additional Chief Secretary Navneet Sehgal said that "Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked to coordinate with neighboring Bihar and Uttarakhand and ensure Covid guidelines are following during the yatra,"

Sehgal stated that comprehensive guidelines concerning the Yatra would be published soon, and a meeting of senior executives will be pressed to address the matter.

Uttrakhand has requested that neighboring states' officers request devotees not to proceed to Haridwar this period for the yearly journey to collect water from the Ganga.

The Kanwar Yatra was not operated in Uttar Pradesh last year due to Covid constraints.
