WB Election: Mithun Chakraborty and Sourav Ganguly considered to run for BJP's lone Rajya Sabha seat
The excitement in West Bengal is seen high because of possible candidates Sourav Ganguly and Mithun Chakraborty...

Digital Desk: As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gears up to run for the state's sole Rajya Sabha seat, excitement has swept over West Bengal's political scene. Two well-known individuals are among the likely contenders: former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and megastar Mithun Chakraborty.

Sources close to the BJP reported that the party is contemplating several well-known names proposed by its state leadership. It is interesting to note that the BJP Bengal leadership has forwarded two distinct lists to Delhi for a single Rajya Sabha seat. Sukanta Majumder, the state's BJP president, offered one list, and Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition, provided the other.

Four people featured on Adhikari's list: the renowned cricketer Sourav Ganguly, better known as "Dada," the former Rajya Sabha member Mithun Chakraborty, the member of the BJP's national executive committee Anirban Ganguly, and the chairman of the Greater Coochbehar People's Association, Anant Maharaj.

Rupa Ganguly and Swapan Dasgupta, two former Rajya Sabha members, are on Majumder's list, along with BJP Bengal spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya, former Minister of Railways Dinesh Trivedi, and Anant Maharaj.

The possible effects of the candidates' entry into politics are currently the subject of heated discussion and debate about the candidates.

Although Sourav Ganguly has not yet responded, sources claim that the BJP leadership has already suggested the nomination to him. Anant Maharaj, on the other hand, stated that he was "unaware of such listings" but that he would take advantage of the chance to help people.

The beginning of the election process for these 10 Rajya Sabha constituencies has been notified by the Election Commission. Because the existing Rajya Sabha members' terms will expire on August 18, the election procedure is set to take place on July 24.

Six Rajya Sabha MPs, including Derek O'Brien, Dola Sen, Pradeep Bhattacharya, Sushmita Dev, Shanta Chhetri, and Sukhendushekha, have terms that are coming to an end. Pradeep Bhattacharya represents the Congress in the Rajya Sabha.

Three of the six seats in Gujarat, one in Goa, and one in West Bengal will all be up for election. Among the ten seats up for election in the Rajya Sabha, notable figures include S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, and Derek O'Brien, the head of the Trinamool Congress. On August 18, their terms will be over.

In West Bengal, elections will be held for six Rajya Sabha seats. To win each of the 294 available seats in the Legislative Assembly, West Bengal will need the backing of 43 MLAs. One seat is predicted to go to the BJP, giving them 34 MLA votes. TMC, on the other side, would require 2215 votes to take home all five open seats.

Intriguing things will happen if the BJP decides to run a candidate. It will be the first time the state unit has accomplished such a feat if a candidate from the Bengal BJP ticket wins the race for the sole seat.

With 93 seats, the BJP now holds the majority in the Rajya Sabha, followed by the Congress with 31 members and Trinamool with 12 MPs. The BJP is anticipated to gain 94 seats in the Rajya Sabha following the 10-seat elections, while the Congress may lose some seats, falling from 31 to 30.
