Win Like AAP: Kejriwal-Led Party Maintains 'Record' of Winning Elections With Large Mandates

In the 2015 elections, the AAP, which had only been on the political stage for two years, won a record 67 seats, a feat rarely accomplished in any state in the past

Digital Desk: The AAP and the party's propensity for winning elections with large mandates was on display once more, with the party poised for a landslide victory in Punjab, confirming its position as a significant alternative political force in the national arena.

According to current trends, the AAP is leading in 90 of Punjab's 117 assembly seats, with a vote share of more than 42%.

This is the AAP's first electoral triumph outside of Delhi since its inception over nine years ago. However, what has piqued people's interest is the party's winning margins in previous elections.

Despite battling anti-incumbency, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won a huge win in the 2020 Delhi Assembly election. The party received 62 seats in the 70-member legislature, while the BJP received eight and the Congress, which had controlled Delhi for 15 years, received none.

In the 2015 elections, the AAP, which had only been on the political stage for two years, won a record 67 seats, a feat rarely accomplished in any state in the past.

The AAP received 53.58 percent of the vote in 2020, a small decrease from 54.3 percent in 2015. The massive mandate in Punjab demonstrates that the AAP's voter base has only increased since 2017, and its popularity now extends to a broader range of people.

Rising unemployment, poor healthcare facilities, education, and other civic problems mentioned by the party while campaigning appear to have resonated with people on the ground.

Arvind Kejriwal's infamous 'Delhi style of administration' appears to have wooed voters in Punjab, a state afflicted by a drug epidemic and mafia raj.

"Punjab has given a chance to Kejriwal's model of governance. Today, his model of governance has been established at the national level. This is the victory of the 'Aam Aadmi' (common man)," ANI quoted AAP leader Manish Sisodia as saying.

The appointment of erstwhile comedian Bhagwant Mann as its chief ministerial face was also a masterstroke at a time when the Congress was mired in infighting and the BJP was facing farmer backlash over the controversial agricultural reform policies, which were eventually rescinded.

Furthermore, established Punjab parties like as the SAD and Congress appear to have underestimated the quiet attitude in favour of change.

During the campaign, the AAP positioned itself as a change agent, with Kejriwal and Mann urging people to vote for "badlav." This was a significant shift from the 2017 elections, when the AAP's primary focus was on the Sikh vote bank.

Indeed, the roots of the AAP's win in Punjab were sowed before to the assembly election when it won 14 of the 35 municipal seats in Chandigarh, a city managed by the Centre, last November. Since then, the party appears to have checked off all the boxes in Punjab.
