Digital Desk: Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Thursday granted bail to former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and former WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar on a personal bond of Rs. 25000 each in the alleged sexual harassment and molestation case filed by six women wrestlers.
The court set limitations on the duo, including a prohibition on leaving the country without prior permission from the court and a promise not to influence witnesses or tamper with evidence. The case has been rescheduled for a hearing on July 28.
Brij Bhushan, 66, is a six-time MP from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who governed the wrestling body for 12 years.
This comes after the court granted the duo interim bail for two days on Tuesday. After the court granted interim bail, additional chief metropolitan magistrate Harjeet Singh Jaspal stated, "In view of the Hon'ble Supreme Court's directions, the accused persons are admitted to interim bail until the next date of hearing upon furnishing bail bonds in the sum of 25,000/- each with one surety in like amount."
Advocates Rajeev Mohan and Rehan Khan, representing Singh and Tomar, filed petitions for bail on the grounds that the charge sheet was filed without arrest and that they had been cooperating with the inquiry.
"In the case at hand, the charge sheet was filed without arrest, and according to the police report, the accused persons cooperated with the investigation. The accused appeared in court today on court summons, without any coercive process. The alleged offenses are punishable by imprisonment for no more than seven years, and the accused persons undertake to appear before this court whenever called and are further ready and willing to furnish bail and are ready to comply with every condition on bail," the court stated in its order.
Renowned Indian wrestlers, including Olympian medalists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, as well as world championship medalist Vinesh Phogat, staged a 38-day protest at Jantar Mantar demanding Singh's immediate arrest. They called off their protest following separate meetings in early June with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, both of whom told them that the charge sheet in the matter will be submitted by June 15.
