Ahead of the Mumbai civic polls, Devendra Fadnavis meets with Raj Thackeray

The meeting between Devendra Fadnavis and Raj Thackeray is significant in light of the forthcoming Mumbai local council elections.

Digital Desk: On Friday, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met with MNS President Raj Thackeray in Mumbai.

The conference is now taking place in 'Shivtirtha,' Mr. Thackeray's mansion in Dadar, central Mumbai.

The MNS leader had hip replacement surgery at the Lilavati Hospital last month. Mr. Fadnavis is seeing Mr. Thackeray for the first time since the operation.

In an open letter to Mr. Fadnavis earlier this month, Mr. Thackeray praised him for exemplifying party loyalty and dedication by accepting the position of deputy chief minister of the state despite being the front-runner for the position.

Given the impending elections for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the impending enlargement of the Maharashtra cabinet headed by Eknath Shinde, the meeting between the two politicians is important.

On June 30, a day after the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) administration led by Uddhav Thackeray collapsed, Mr. Shinde assumed office as chief minister. He and most Shiv Sena MLAs had defected against the party's leadership. As his deputy, Mr. Fadnavis was sworn in.

The BJP's victory in these important elections, in which its candidates received more votes than it did, came immediately before the Shiv Sena uprising, which led to the fall of the Uddhav Thackeray-led administration.
