Digital Desk: The Indian aviation sector has been experiencing turmoil as many airlines have reported numerous technical issues and have been forced to make emergency landings. In the past year, till June 30, Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet reported 184, 98, and 77 technical snag incidents, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, V K Singh, stated in his written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha that Go First, Vistara, and AirAsia India reported 50, 40, and 14 incidents related to technical difficulties in the abovementioned period.

While the government-run carrier Alliance Air had five mishaps in a year, Air India Express had ten, he said. The Tata Group assumed control of Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express on January 27, after successfully bidding for the airline on October 8, last year.

"In total, 478 incidents of technical difficulties were reported in the last year between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022," Singh said.

"An aircraft may run into technical difficulties because of faulty equipment or parts installed on the aircraft," he further added.

The flight crew reports these technical issues when they hear or see a warning in the cockpit, when a system appears to be malfunctioning or inoperable, or when they are having trouble handling or flying the aircraft, he noted. Currently, SpiceJet operates not more than 50% of its flights in accordance with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation's instructions.

The airline's flights were halted for eight weeks in July after at least eight cases of technical malfunction happened between June 19 and July 5.
