Bijoya Chakravarty, one of the senior most Member of Parliaments in Lok Sabha and a cabinet minister during the Vajpayee-led government in the Centre, slammed the Trinamool Congress Party for trying to create unrest in Assam.
While speaking at the Lok Sabha on Friday, Chakravarty, who represents Guwahati said, “Shanti Purvak Vatavaran” (Calm and peace situation) prevails in Assam. There is no tension across the state over the NRC. There are 37 districts in Assam and there is a considerable Bengali population in all the districts. In my constituency, there are over 3 lakh Bengalis. There has been no protest by the Bengalis.”
She added, “Section 144 is imposed in Assam only as a precaution. The arrests had to bedone since the Trinamool members instigated it.”
The Trinamool members protested her statements.
“Let me speak….I didn’t disturb you when you were speaking. Without any knowledge, the Trinamool Congress is trying to disrupt the peace prevailing in Assam,” she said.
Two time MP from Assam, Gaurav Gogoi stated that the people left out in the list are showing exemplary courage and are helping in maintaining peace in Assam.
Gogoi also stated that 90 per cent of the application submission for the NRC update was completed during the Congress rule in Assam. Chakravarty said that it was the BJP and Supreme Court which “brought out the NRC from the cold storage of Congress” and started the process.
On the other hand, Congress leader and Party’s West Bengal unit chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury stated that the Assamese and Bengalis are living together for several decades. “This unity must not be harmed,” he says.
Militant turned politician Naba Kumar Sarania, member from Kokrajhar, stated that over 3 lakh names have been left out in his constituency.
