Digital Desk: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Sunday, Bengaluru's local body, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has issued a ban on animal slaughter and the sale of meat throughout the city (October 2).
"On Sunday, Gandhi Jayanti, there will be a total prohibition on animal killing and the sale of meat within the BBMP limits," the BBMP said in a notification released on Tuesday. On Sunday, the 153rd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who is revered for his ideas of nonviolence and peace, will be observed across the country.
Similar actions have been announced in the past by the Bengaluru local council. On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi last month, the civic authority prohibited the slaughter of animals and the sale of meat.
Across Karnataka, August 31st is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi. According to a circular issued by the local body, "on that day, animal killing and sale of meat is absolutely prohibited in the regions that fall under the jurisdiction of BBMP in Bengaluru."
The restriction extended to Krishna Janmashtami and Maha Shivratri, Karnataka's Martyr's Day. However, some Internet users have already opposed to the action, questioning the motive for the policy and labelling it "political."
