New Delhi : Former Finance Minister of India P. Chidambaram faces arrest as the court rejected his request for protection from arrest. The former finance minister is wanted in the INX media case, where Mr. Chidambaram is accused of facilitating the government’s clearance for huge injection of foreign funds to the television company INX Media as Finance Minister in the UPA government, for which his son Karti Chidambaram allegedly received kickbacks.
The case is alleged to be a political case from 2010, when Mr. Chidambaram was Home Minister in the Congress-led government and Amit Shah, who is home minister today, was arrested in an alleged fake encounter case in Gujarat.
The CBI had alleged that Amit Shah, as Home Minister of Gujarat ordered the extra-judicial killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, a petty criminal, his wife, and their friend who was a witness to Sheikh’s killing in 2005. But a court cleared him, saying there was no evidence of his involvement.
Surprisingly, P Chidambaram was nailed after the statements of murder convict Indrani Mukherjea and her husband Peter Mukherjea, who promoted INX Media, were recorded by the Enforcement Directorate. Indrani Mukherjea, who is wanted in her daughter’s murder, told the agency that after INX Media’s application was submitted to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board for foreign direct investment approval, she went to meet Chidambaram at his office in North Block, Delhi, along with her husband and a senior company executive.

“Peter started the conversation with P Chidambaram and referred to INX Media’s application to bring FDI and handed a copy of the application to him (Chidambaram). After having understood the issue Chidambaram told Peter to help his son Karti in his business and make possible overseas remittances in lieu of FIPB approval,” Indrani told ED. Her statement is part of the chargesheet and attachment orders filed by the ED before court.
