New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has set a two-week deadline for paying compensation and a government job to Bilkis Bano who was gang raped in Randhikpur village in Dahod district of Gujarat during the post-Godhra riots. In April this year, the Gujarat government was ordered by the apex court to pay a compensation of Rs. 50 lakh to the victim.
Bilkis Yakub Rasool was 19-year-old and pregnant when she was gang raped during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The court has ordered the government to pay her compensation as well as provide her accommodation rejecting the Gujarat government petition on Monday by which the state government wanted the April order to be reviewed.
The Gujarat government was also asked by the apex court today to take disciplinary action against the erring police officials, including IPS officer R S Bhagora, for dereliction of duty in relation to the sensational Bilkis Bano gang rape case. It is noteworthy that in May 2017, the Bombay High Court had convicted seven people including five policemen and two doctors under sections 218 and section 201 of Indian Penal Code.
