Hyderabad : A boat carrying 60 passengers capsized in the swollen Godavari River with several people feared drowned and over 10 passengers rescued till now. The river has been in spate for the past few days and over 5.13 lakh cusecs of floodwater was flowing on Sunday afternoon when the mishap occurred.
As per sources there were about 60 people on board including 11 crew members in the boat run by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation. The tourist boat was carrying tourists towards the picturesque Papikondalu when it capsized an hour later at Katchuluru village.
On noticing the accident, Thutugunta villagers saved 10 persons. A couple of bodies were retrieved from the river by the villagers. Officials are unsure as to how the Kakinada Port officials gave permission to the boat as flood was continuing in Godavari for the last few days. An inquiry would be ordered into the incident, the East Godavari district officials said.
Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and Chief Secretary L.V.Subramanyam enquired about the accident and directed Tourism Minister Avanti Srinivas and other officials to monitor the rescue operations at the spot.
NDRF 10th Battalion Commandant Zahid Khan said that two teams, comprising of 30 forces each, from Visakhapatnam and Guntur rushed to the spot under the supervision of Deputy Commandant (Operations) D.N.Singh.
