New Delhi: On Friday, the government extended the date for making FASTag mandatory on national highways to December 15. The date has been extended as the government wants to allow a 15 days’ breather for vehicle owners to switch to FASTags.
As the commuters scrambled to comply with the new mandate, Union highways minister Nitin Gadkari had called for an extension. According to the new rule, all lanes at toll plazas will be declared as FASTag lanes from December 15. The vehicles entering the ETC lane without FASTags will have to incur twice the toll fee from December 15.
The officials said that the number of FASTags sold have been increasing and so far 90 percent toll plazas have been equipped with electronic tolling. From November 21, the government offered FASTags free of cost at all toll plazas to encourage a wider adoption. This will continue until December 15.
