Digital Desk: In the wake of new coronavirus
variants, nearing the 100 per day mark of COVID cases, Tamil Nadu Health
Minister Ma Subramanian blamed the North Indian students for the spike in
COVID-19 cases in the state.
"North
Indian students are spreading COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu." Students from
Kelambakkam VIT College and Sathyasai College have been affected by the
coronavirus infection in hostels and classes,
"Subramanian stated." In some North Indian states, COVID-19
cases are still increasing," he added.
People
are showing discontentment over the comments made by the Health Minister.
"Blaming a particular region for the spike in COVID cases is an immature
act," people commented.
Tamil
Nadu reported as many as 98 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the
overall tally reaching 34,55,474. However, no casualties have been reported
yet.
The
number of people who have recovered from the virus rose to 34,16,907 with 49
more people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, leaving 542 active
COVID-19 cases.
Chengalpet
and Chennai districts accounted for a majority of cases, with 46 and 44
respectively. Coimbatore and Tiruvallur added four each, while Kancheepuram and
Vellore added one each.
India
registered 2,745 new COVID cases in the last 24 hours, 407 more than yesterday,
after a declining trend for the past few days.
The
number of active cases in the country rose to 18,386 from 17,883 yesterday. The
active cases represent 0.04 percent of the total caseload in the country.
