Hyderabad: The mother of Mohammad Areef, one of the accused in the rape and murder case of the vet near Hyderabad last week, thinks her son should be put through the same ordeal suffered by the victim.
It was, to put it plainly, a crime of staggering cruelty, the men spotted her as she parked her two-wheeler at a toll plaza, they dragged her out of public view, forced her to drink alcohol and raped her; then they smothered her, burned her body with petrol and dumped it under a culvert.
When Parliament reconvened after the weekend, government and opposition were united in condemning the four accused: Areef, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu. Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan said such people should be lynched in public.
Areef’s mother says she wants her son stoned to death, hanged, or suffer a fate similar to the victim’s and she isn’t alone among the accused’s family members having such strong feelings. Chennakeshavulu’s mother says her son should be strictly punished. “A mother can only understand the pain of losing a child,” she said. “He is my son but I will not defend him.”
