New Delhi : On the occasion of Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand’s birthday which also marks India’s national sports day, Indian government decided to postpone the celebrations to September 25 due to Asian Games schedule overlapping.
Every year on August 29, the entire Rashtrapati Bhawan is decked up on the occasion of National Sports Day where the main function is hosted. But this time Rashtrapati Bhawan will be giving a miss to the Sports Awards Function followed by the celebrations due to Asian Games 2018 schedule.
Dhyan Chand, a name best known as the Wizard of Hockey in the sports world whose skill with his hockey stick was no less than a magician’s magic wand. Dhyan Chand is the best gift for the country whose magic on the hockey field has been phenomenal.
The Indian women’s hockey team takes on China in the semi-finals of the Asian Games being held in Indonesia. A win will give them a shot at winning only their second Asiad gold after 1982, when women’s hockey was introduced to the quadrennial event.
India has progressed a lot in the sports field in the last five years. The spontaneous growth in sports will warm the heart of India’s sports fraternity today.
Known as the The Wizard or The Magician of hockey for his superb ball control, Chand played his final international match in 1948, having scored more than 400 goals (highest goal scorer in the history oh hockey) during his international career. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1956. His birthday, 29 August, is celebrated as National Sports Day in India every year.
