New Delhi: On Saturday, a survey by National Statistical Office (NSO) showed that the urban unemployment of the country fell to 9.3 percent during January-March 2019 from 9.8 percent in April-June 2018.
As per the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the unemployment rate in the urban areas among the males was estimated at 8.7 percent during January-March 2019 period as compared to 9 percent during April-June 2018. For women, it was 11.6 per cent as against 12.8 percent during April-June 2018.
The overall labour for participation rate (LFPR) was estimated as 36 percent in the urban areas during January-March 2019 as compared to 35.6 percent during April-June 2018. The government has been receiving a lot of criticism for the high rate of unemployment along with the slow economic growth. The government data in May this year showed that joblessness in the country was 6.1 per cent of the total labour force during 2017-2018 which is the highest in 45 year.
