Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir’s block development council (BDC) polls began today across the 22 districts of the state amid tight security, as the first electoral exercise was boycotted by the Congress, National Conference and the PDP after the state’s special status was abrogated. The polling began from 9 am to 1 pm and the results will be declared later in the day.
The district electoral officer of Jammu district Sushma Chauhan said that there were no untoward incident reported anywhere in Jammu. Security has been tight at all polling stations and due care has been taken about the security of panchs and sarpanches who are going to vote for the BDC polls.
There are 316 blocks in the state, out of which two are without elected panches or sarpanches, and four blocks have been reserved for women. Ballot boxes are being used during the block development council polls.
