Lucknow: Omar Rashid, a journalist of the Hindu while talking to PTI said, he was sitting in a restaurant along with his friends when the police in plainclothes picked him up labeling him as a “rioter”. Omar was waiting for a Press Conference by the UP Government. Although Rashid showed them his identity card, his phone was snatched away and the police took him into custody as Hazratganj police station.
One of his friends, Robin Verma was also taken into custody in the same police station. The police accused Omar of organizing the Thursday protest against CAA in the city and said he will be booked for conspiring the episode under 120B of Indian Penal Code. His Kashmiri background was questioned several times. Rashid said’ “I told them that I am a journalist, showed them my identity card, and asked why were they taking me with them. They took away my phone and hurled abuses too .”
They were later taken to Sultanpuri police post and released after an intervention of the UP DGP O P Singh. Circle Officer Hazratganj Abhay Kumar Mishra later came to see him and apologized for the “mistake in identity”. However, an official from Hazratganj police station denied any such detention.
