New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tributes to the “Iron man of India” Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel on his 144th birth anniversary today at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat. He is also scheduled to host several events on the occasion in Ahmedabad.
Speaking at the event organised on the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, PM Modi credited Patel for unification stating that diversity is our strength, not weakness. He further said, “Centuries ago India was united by Chanakya, and after that Sardar Patel did it. No country embraces diversity like India. Our unity is the best tribute we can pay to Sardar Patel.”
Raking up Article 370, the PM dedicated its abrogation to Patel adding that the Article 370 is “a wall that has gone now”. The Modi government had been observing Patel’s birth anniversary as ‘Ekta Diwas’ or National Unity Day since 2014. PM Modi also hit out at Pakistan during the event saying that India’s enemies are upset by the country’s unity.
