There have been four confirmed cases of monkeypox in India thus far, three of them in Kerala. On Saturday, the hospital released the patient who had the initial case to be reported.
Digital Desk: A 22-year-old youth who died in Thrissur on Saturday has tested positive for monkeypox while he was in the United Arab Emirates, state Health Minister Veena George said on Sunday.
Days after returning from the UAE, the youth, a resident of Punniyoor in Thrissur, died there in a private hospital. Although the findings of the tests conducted in the UAE revealed the presence of the monkeypox virus, the government stated that an investigation would be carried out to determine the cause of death.
"The young person showed no signs of monkeypox. Due to exhaustion and encephalitis symptoms, he was hospitalised. Only on Saturday did his family deliver the test results. The minister added that given that monkeypox has an extremely low fatality rate, a high-level investigation would be conducted into the death.
His samples have been transferred to the National Institute of Virology's Alappuzha branch in Kerala by the state health department.
The young man, who was working at Ras al-Khaimah in the UAE, arrived at Kozhikode Airport in Kerala on July 22, according to sources at the health department. "After getting home, he started moving around. He played football at a nearby field. He went to a local hospital on July 26 for treatment after getting a fever. Later, he was transferred to another hospital, where he was put on life support. Before boarding the trip to Kerala, he claimed to have undergone testing in the UAE. After his passing, we learned that he had been instructed to relax once he got home. The family was reluctant to raise the issue with the health department or the nearby village panchayat until Saturday", sources said.
The young man passed away on Saturday afternoon, and his funeral was held in accordance with the disease's protocol. His primary contacts are all being observed.

Meanwhile, Spain on Saturday reported the second monkeypox-related death in two days. These deaths are thought to be the first verified cases of monkeypox in Europe following its recent expansion outside of Africa.
Since May, there have been more than 22,000 cases of the monkeypox outbreak in nearly 80 countries. 75 suspected fatalities have occurred in Africa, especially in Nigeria and the Congo.
However, the experts stated that monkeypox has a very low level of fatality rate.
