Digital Desk: Held every 12 years at four major locations, Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain, Mahakumbh Mela is a major Indian festival that experiences the gatherings of Hindu pilgrims from all over India. Previously held in 2013; experienced a gathering of about 30-50 million people just to bathe in the holy waters of the river Ganga. With the estimates of such large numbers, Mahakumbh is considered to be the largest peaceful gathering of people in the world.
This year the Mela will take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh from 13th January to 26th February. During this time, crores of devotees gather seeking spiritual purification by bathing in the holy rivers.
Kumbh Melas are held on the banks of sacred rivers; the convergence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati in Prayagraj, Ganga in Haridwar, Shipra in Ujjain, and Godavari in Nashik. This year's Mahakumbh is important as it is happening after 144 years at Prayagraj because of a rare astronomical alignment of planets and stars in our solar system.
A holy dip taken during the auspicious planetary alignment along with the chanting of proper mantras with faith will ward off negative energy, fulfill wishes, and discharge a person from his or her sins. Lasting for over 44 days, the mela will start from Makar Sankranti which is popularly
known as Magh Bihu in Assam on January 13 and concludes on Maha Shivratri on February 26.
Throughout 44 days many cultural and spiritual events will take place; even many prominent figures and celebrities are said to be attending the grand devotional event. Shankar Mahadevan will be performing on the opening day with Mohit Chauhan concluding the event with his heartfelt
music. Apart from these two, many prominent artists including Kailash Kher, Shaan Mukherjee, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kavita Seth, and many others will perform at the event.
The Mahakumbh Mela is a lifetime experience for the people of India where individuals gather in large numbers to experience devotion and culture in one place. It rejuvenates as well as cleanses the human mind and spirit from negativity.
