Digital Desk: Thousands of devotees gathering at the Sangam in Prayagraj on Wednesday resulted in a tragic stampede that occurred during the current Mahakumbh mela on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya for their Hindu ritual bathing. Official statements about the death toll remains unclear but witnesses confirmed at least 15 people brought their bodies to medical facilities. The incident took place around 2:30 am when, huge numbers of believers reached the Sangam's riverbanks around that time for bathing ceremonies.
An eyewitness who works as a social media content creator in the area said devotion-related confusion caused the stampede event. Many pilgrims were seen carrying heavy luggage, and were unaware of where to go after their post-bath directions. Multiple people experienced injuries due to iron dustbins which spread throughout the area while people were trying to walk from source to destination. Each iron dustbin became an extra obstacle that led to multiple falls. The situation escalated as many pilgrims Panicked and its actions led to more people stumbling to the ground as those caught .During the stampede the content creator also sustained injuries while he directed his parents and another woman to safety from the dangerous scene.
As a result of the tragedy, the organization of Akharas called off their annual 'Amrit Snan' religious activity on Mauni Amavasya day. Despite the stampede incident, thousands of religious followers maintained their journey between the Sangam and other ghats in the Mela area for their holy bath. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for an assessment of the aftermath.
