New Delhi : In the ongoing 70th Republic Day celebration across the nation, Assam’s “Manchester of the East– Sualkuchi” shone at Rajpath.
Assam’s tableau showcased ‘Manchester of the East’- Sualkuchi at the 70th Republic Day parade in New Delhi on January 26, 2019. The Tableau was approved by the Ministry of Defence on January 21st, 2019.
The tableau presented tradition, culture of the local weavers. Music maestro Bhupen Hazarika’s song Jai Jai Ram Rahim played in the background as the tableau passed through as the crowd cheered.
As a befitting tribute to father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary, the tableau for this year’s Republic Day showcased life of Gandhi as a theme.
Talking about the ‘Manchester of the East’, Sualkuchi is a census town in Kamrup district with textile industry being its main mode of profession. Muga silk and Pat silk along with Eri silk and Endi cloth from this region is famous for its quality. Mekhela chadors and gamosas made from this indigenous material is in demand throughout Assam as well as other parts of India.
22 tabelaux of states and central government departments and performance by school children were part of the 90-minute Republic Day parade. Fifty- eight tribal guests from various parts of the country took part in the Republic Day celebrations at the Rajpath.
