Digital Desk: Teachers’ Day or Shikshak Divas marks the birthday of the country’s first Vice President (1952–1962) who went on to become the second President of India (1962-1967), a scholar, philosopher, Bharat Ratna awardee, Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. Radhakrishnan was a scholar, philosopher, and recipient of the Bharat Ratna award.
In the year 1888, on September 5, he was born. However, on his 77th birthday in 1962, teachers' day was first celebrated. He was a teacher who later became a politician, scholar, and philosopher. He committed the entirety of his life to spreading the value of education in people's lives.

History of National Teachers' Day
In 1962, when Dr. Radhakrishan became India's second president, his students came to him to ask for permission to observe September 5 as a special day. Instead, Dr. Radhakrishnan urged them to observe September 5 as Teachers' Day in order to recognise the value of teachers to the society.
Since that time, all academic institutions—including schools, colleges, and universities—celebrate September 5 as Teacher's Day. Students put on performances, dance, and plan extravagant events for their favourite professors.
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in a Telugu-speaking Niyogi Brahmin family, in Tiruttani of Madras district in the erstwhile Madras Presidency (later in Andhra Pradesh till 1960, now in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu since 1960). Sarvepalli Veeraswami and Sita gave birth to him (Sitamma). His ancestors are from Sarvepalli village in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district.
Honors & Awards:
Throughout his life, Radhakrishnan received a number of prestigious honours, including a knighthood in 1931, the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1954, and honorary membership in the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. He was also a founder member of Helpage India, a charitable organisation in India that supports the elderly and underprivileged.
