NTA has expanded JEE centres within India, bringing them to several remote areas in collaboration with local authorities.
Digital Desk: International centres for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, India's most popular engineering entrance exam, have opened for the first time in cities such as Washington, DC, Moscow, and Ottawa, as the National Testing Agency (NTA) decided to expand beyond Southeast and West Asia.
According to NTA Director General Vineet Joshi, the NTA has also expanded JEE centres within India, bringing them to several remote areas in collaboration with local authorities such as district magistrates and police.
According to Joshi, JEE centres have been established for the first time in the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, and Mauritius. There are 19 overseas centres in total, with 1,226 candidates registered to take the exam.
"This time, centres are located in Washington, DC, Moscow, Ottawa, Jakarta, and Port Louis." We had never ventured outside of the Middle East and Southeast Asia before. Despite the fact that only a few candidates registered to take the exam at those locations, we decided to make the necessary arrangements. "This can be viewed as a scaled-up outreach effort," Joshi explained.
According to a breakdown of the numbers, Dubai had the most registered candidates (405), followed by Sharjah (150), and Muscat (100). (133). There are two candidates in Jakarta and Ottawa, one in Port Louis, one in Washington DC, and three in Moscow.
Joshi stated that the NTA worked closely with Indian embassies to establish overseas centres.
"Keeping in mind the interests of students from the Indian diaspora, the Ministry of Education, Government of India, has decided to include Washington DC as an Exam City for holding the JEE (Main) 2022 Examination," according to a notice issued by the Indian embassy in the US.
Following student requests, a centre was established in Nigeria in 2021 as a result of COVID-19 travel restrictions.
JEE (Main) scores are primarily used for undergraduate engineering admissions at National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other centrally funded technical institutions, as well as some state government-run technical institutions. It is also a prerequisite for JEE (Advanced), which is used to gain admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
While Session 1 of JEE (Main) had an attendance of 88.21% in June, the first four days of the week-long Session 2, which began on Monday (July 25), had a 79% attendance.
Rajasthan had the highest rate of attendance at 91%, while Arunachal Pradesh had the lowest rate at 62% of registered candidates. Session 2 attracted a total of 5.55 lakh candidates.
Joshi stated that the second session of the exam was difficult to hold due to the Kanwar Yatra and floods in many parts of the country.
"There were requests to change some centres, citing Kanwar Yatra, but we declined." Instead, we contacted the district magistrates and requested that the exam admit card be recognised as a valid journey pass. "Exams have been held smoothly in flood-affected districts as well, with average attendance remaining around 86-87 per cent," Joshi said.
In addition to Nalbari and Darang in Assam, Araria, Banka, Begusarai, Buxar, Motihari, and Purnia in Bihar, Dahod in Gujarat, Haveri, and Chikkaballapur in Karnataka are a few locations across the nation where exam centres have been established for the first time.
