Odisha: The authorities in Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) have appointed five transgenders individuals as security guards in a bid to empower the LGBTQIA+. They were appointed so that they could live an independent life. With a monthly remuneration of Rs 6000 to Rs 7000, insurance and other facilities, they will work as security guards at the female, gynecology and pediatrics wards of the hospital.
Durga, Sonali, Tushar, Kailash and Hial were appointed under the Nirmal scheme and trained by the Malkagiri District Police before taking up the new job. Kailash Dora in an interview mentioned that they joined after undergoing training of 15 days and all of them are extremely happy staying at the hospital for 8 hours and taking care of the patients.
In 2018, Odisha government launched the Nirmal scheme to upgrade the healthcare facilities in all the state-run hospitals. The scheme focuses on providing the basic facilities like sanitation, security services and affordable health care services for everyone.
