    Digital Desk: The government informed Parliament on Tuesday that more than 3.9 lakh Indians had given up their citizenship in the last three years, with America appearing as the top destination out of 103 countries where the emigrants opted to relocate.


    According to data from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, more than 1.63 lakh Indians have relinquished their citizenship in 2021 alone. It added that more than 78,000 of them obtained US citizenship.




    The data showed that while 1.44 lakh Indians relinquished their citizenship in 2019, the number dipped to 85,256 in 2020 before climbing again last year.


    In response to a query by BSP MP Hazi Fazlur Rehman, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed the Parliament that the Ministry of External Affairs reported that Indian citizens have relinquished their "for reasons personal to them."


    The figures show that numerous people have chosen to renounce their citizenship for Bahrain (170), Angola (2), Iran (21), and Iraq (1), in addition to Singapore (7,046) and Sweden (3,754) and one individual took Burkina Faso's citizenship in 2021.


    The data showed that more than 1,400 people obtained Chinese citizenship, while 48 people switched citizenship to Pakistan.
