Digital Desk: An 18-year-old NEET candidate with hepatic encephalopathy died during treatment at a private hospital here on Saturday, an official said.
Victim Vaibhav Roy was one of 36 pupils from the Jawahar Nagar area who had been infected with the sickness in recent days. 18 of them have recovered, while the rest are being treated at three private hospitals.
Hepatic encephalopathy is a neurological system illness caused by advanced liver disease.
Dr. Jagdish Soni, CMHO of Kota, said that three water providers in the area were found to be giving tainted drinking water to coaching institutes, dormitories, and canteens. However, he stated that the specific reason of Mr Roy's death will be determined by a death audit, which is currently underway.
Dr. Rajiv Sharma, who treated Mr Roy, said he was taken to the hospital on October 5 for fever and jaundice but was diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy within a few days.
Dr Sharma stated that there was a swelling in his brain that became serious, and he died on Thursday.
Thirty-five other students recently tested positive for hepatitis A. Following this, a health department team gathered at least 65 samples of water from various sources, according to Dr Soni, adding that three water suppliers were found to be giving polluted water to coaching institutes, dormitories, and canteens, among other places.
"At least 10-12 coaching kids have been hospitalised for hepatitis-A treatment for more than a week," Dr K K Pareek of S N Pareek Memorial and Multi-specialty Hospital, where the majority of these students are being treated, stated.
"The infection was most likely caused by contaminated water and food, as the patients' liver enzymes were discovered to be frighteningly high, but all of them are improving," he said.
Brij Mohan Bairwa, additional district magistrate in Kota (city), said the CMHO has been instructed to investigate the incident and a report from him is anticipated.
