Digital Desk: The Supreme Court has refused Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu’s plea to grant him more time to surrender on medical grounds after being sentenced to one year in jail in the 1988 road rage case.
Sidhu was supposed to surrender today before a court in Patiala, but he asked for more time to undergo the sentenced imprisonment citing some health issues.
Navjot Sidhu’s lawyer, AM Singhvi, requested that the matter be brought before the Supreme Court; however, the court rejected the permission. The Supreme Court ordered Sidhu to write a letter requesting extra time to surrender to the registry.
Reportedly, Sidhu will be taken into custody by Punjab police as per the order. The court previously fined the former Punjab Congress president Rs 1,000. But on Thursday, while hearing a petition submitted by the victim’s relatives, the Supreme Court expanded the term of punishment.
The case involves the death of a man named Gurnam Singh, a Patiala native, in December 1988, when Sidhu and a companion attacked him in a road rage incident.
