Weak Asian currencies, a lackluster trend in domestic equities, and continued foreign capital outflows, according to currency traders, weighed on investor emotions.

The rupee began at 78.20 versus the US dollar on the interbank foreign exchange, before losing ground to quote at 78.29, a new low, down 36 paise from the previous closing.

"Weak global sentiments and weak Asian and European currencies have allowed the rupee to open below 78 after the RBI guaranteed it would not cross 77.70," said Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors. We'll have to keep an eye on the RBI in the coming days."

Meanwhile, the global oil benchmark, Brent crude futures, fell 1.46 percent to $120.23 per barrel.

The dollar index, which measures the value of the US currency against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.30 percent to 104.45.

Notably, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 1,540 points (2.84 percent) lower at 52763 at 10.15 a.m., while the broader NSE Nifty was down 444 points (2.74 percent) to 15,757.
