SC permits bail to Indrani Mukerjea after 6.5 years of custody in Sheena Bora murder case
Indrani Mukerjea has already spent six and a half years in custody, and the trial in the Sheena Bora murder case won't get over early.

Digital Desk: The Supreme Court granted bail to former media executive Indrani Mukerjea on Wednesday, the main accused in the high-profile murder case of Sheena Bora in 2012. The judges decided that Mukerjea's sentence of six and a half years in prison was exorbitant.

The Court also noted that Peter Mukherjea, the other accused in the case, has been out on bail since February 2020. The Court granted Indrani bail, subject to the same conditions that Peter Mukherjea was granted bail.

Mukerjea had applied for bail in the Supreme Court in January. She filed a special leave petition (SLP) against the Bombay High Court's November 16 order denying her bail in the case; she was arrested on August 25, 2015, and has been held in custody since.

In March, the CBI opposed her bail application in the Supreme Court because Indrani Mukerjea was accused of planning and killing her own daughter.

A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai, and AS Bopanna issued the order in a special leave petition filed in November 2021 against an order issued by the Bombay High Court.

The Supreme Court bench noted that the case is based on circumstantial evidence and that even if the prosecution gives up half of the witnesses, the trial will proceed.

Mukerjea recently made headlines when she sent a letter to the CBI claiming that her daughter Sheena Bora was alive. The CBI has stated unequivocally that the particular angle won't pursue unless the Court intervenes.

Mukherjea's driver, who was arrested in another case, confessed to murdering Sheena Bora, Indrani Mukerjea and her second husband, Sanjeev Khanna.

Brief About Sheena Bora Murder Case:

Sheena Bora was Indrani's daughter from her first marriage with Siddhartha Das. Bora allegedly had an affair with Rahul, Peter Mukerjea's son from his previous marriage.

According to reports at Mukerjea's arrest in 2015, Indrani Mukerjea introduced Sheena Bora as her sister to both Peter and Rahul.

Indrani Mukerjea was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, which took place in 2012. In 2019, Peter and Indrani ended their 17-year-old marriage after a family court granted them divorce.
