Digital Desk: Senior advocate R Venkataramani was on Wednesday appointed as the new Attorney General of India for a period of three years. He will succeed KK Venugopal, whose term ends on September 30. Earlier this week, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi turned down the central government's offer of a second term as AG.
Rohatgi had previously held the top post from June 2014 to June 2017. He was succeeded by Venugopal, who earlier this year expressed his desire to resign from the position for "personal reasons." The AG agreed to the government's request near the end of June and was subsequently reappointed as the nation's top law officer for three months-until September 30.
Venkataramani had previously served as a member of the Law Commission of India in 2010. He has been appearing for the State of Tamil Nadu as a Special Senior Counsel for the past 12 years and has been a Special Senior Counsel for the State of Andhra Pradesh.
