Gangtok : The people of Sikkim have threatened to protest against the Centre against its decision of opening Mt. Kanchenjunga for mountaineering expeditions and trekking as it will put the region under grave danger of being exploited by mountaineers.
Some organizations have even threatened that if the center fails to withdraw the notification before the Pang Lhabsol festival that falls on 13 September, which is dedicated to Mt Kanchenjunga, then they will hit the streets in protest.
A ‘Save Kanchenjunga Forum’ was constituted under the aegis of Press Club of Sikkim. The main demand of the forum would be withdrawal of the recent notification from Home Ministry to allow the scaling of Mt Kanchenjunga. The newly opened forum would be soon organizing a signature campaign and after the signature campaign, various resource persons from concerned organizations will deliver their talk on that subject matter.
It is to be mentioned that India’s premier mountaineering authority, Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), yesterday had announced not to issue permits to scale Mt Kanchenjunga while the people of Sikkim continue to ask the state government to maintain the sacredness of the peak.
