New Delhi : A political stalwart who gave a new dimension to the foreign affairs ministry through her quick response to people who would approach her with their concerns on social media, Sushma Swaraj represented the era where woman would be less expected to be a participant in the politics of the country.
“Even if you are stuck in Mars, Indian Embassy will help you there,” Sushma Swaraj had tweeted in response to a netizen when a man asked her to help, saying that he was “stuck on Mars”.
Sushma Swaraj was a woman politician who served the Bharatiya Janata Party since the time of Emergency. She began her political career with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the 1970s. her husband, Swaraj Kaushal was closely associated with the socialist leader Geroge Fernandes and Sushma Swaraj became a part of George Fernandes’s legal defence team in 1975.
After tenure in national level politics, in October 1998 she resigned from the Union Cabinet to take over as the first female Chief Minister of Delhi. Swaraj resigned from the position in December the same year.
Swaraj had served as the Indian Minister of External Affairs under Prime Minister Narendra Modu from May 2014 to May 2019. She was responsible for implementing the foreign policy of Narendra Modi. She was only the second woman to hold this position after Indira Gandhi.
Sushma Swaraj decided to step down from her political role in the Bharatiya Janata Party in the running year owing to her bad health. She recently underwent a kidney transplant which forced her to minimise her work pressure and thus her decision to limit her political duties.
Swaraj passed away on 6th August 2019 in AIIMS, Delhi following a heart attack. Senior BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the hospital to pay their last respect to one of the greatest woman leader India has witnessed in this era.
