Two Muslim students from Malappuram, Mohammed Jabir P K, and Mohammed Basith M, won the online Ramayana quiz, which had more than 1,000 participants. They are studying in a Wafy programme at the KKHM Islamic & Arts College in Valanchery.
Jabir read passages from the Ramayana as required reading for the course and also made use of additional readings from the campus library.
He had an advantage because the eight-year Wafy course included Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism in a study on Indian faiths, according to Jabir. There is a paper in the course that covers topics like Christianity, Judaism, Taoism, etc.
"The Ramayana emphasises the principles of peace and love. There are also lessons to be learned about good governance, honouring one's father's word, and sacrificing one's authority for one's brother," Jabir further added.
He only needs a fast review before the exam.
Jabir, a native of Perinthalmanna, is a Wafy PG final-year student who has earned a BA in Sociology.
It may be mentioned that he learned about the Ramayana quiz from the Telegram group of DC Books and signed up for it. "Besides a quick brush-up, no elaborate preparation was involved," he said.
