Guwahati : Assam Police Commando of the Veerangana unit (a woman unit of the Assam Police), Bishmita Likhak will be bestowed with the National Award in Delhi’s Rajendra Bhawan.
Bishmita will be conferred with the prestigious ‘Virangana Savitribai Phule National Award 2019’ for her optimum service to the society and exceptional achievements in the last few years in the line of duty.
Bishmita Likhak is a resident of Narayanpur in Lakhimpur district of Assam. She is commando working with the special unit called Veerangana – India’s first female commando unit which was officially raised by former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in the year 2012 to act against eve teasers in Guwahati city.
The Veerangana team is ‘specially trained” also called as “silent drill”, known only to US marines, martial arts, bike riding and horse riding. They are also taught with the handling of lethal and non-lethal arms.
The women commandos are seen sporting a black uniform with a violet cap. They are trained to swiftly carry out their tasks against eve teasers and probable mischief people who pose a threat to the safety and dignity of a woman.
